Somalia

Organisations in Somalia are using Loop to learn from communities how to better support them. Since 2022, voice (IVRR) has been the primary input channel.

IVRR feedback system closes the digital divide for Somali users

In September of 2022 we launched our pioneering Interactive Voice Response and Reply (IVRR) input channel in Somalia. IVRR is a unique process to get feedback and respond to people in Somalia who:

Speak Somali Maay or Somalia Maxatiri dialects

Developing this interactive voice technology is one of the most exciting aspects of Loop’s work in closing the digital divide.

People in Somalia can call Loop to give their feedback,
completely free, on 2023.

Local languages give Loop users greater accessibility

Accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of our platform. Feedback submitted in any of the languages below is translated to over 10 other languages, so you can engage directly.

"There is huge potential for Loop. It's the last missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Everyone is asking to hear from communities more, and to be more accountable to them. Loop is applicable everywhere."

Center for Peace and Democracy (CPD), Somalia

Locally-owned from the very beginning

Loop carried out a pilot project and built a prototype for the Somali context in 2021. Loop received funding as a subcontractor to NEXUS, the only Somalia NGO Consortium in Somalia, as one small part of the larger Localised Humanitarian Action programme which they led. The fund manager was Oxfam Novib and the donor was the Disaster Relief Alliance, through the Dutch Government. This was a short-term pilot that finished at the end of 2021 as planned.

After the pilot, NEXUS members decided that CPD (Centre for Peace and Democracy) should host and lead on the roll out of Loop, on behalf of the NEXUS members long term. CPD is a founding member of the NEXUS consortium and a strong national organisation with programmes across the whole of Somalia.

Loop successfully raised funds in 2022, from the British Government's FCDO Safe-Guarding Unit, to build the Interactive Voice Response and Reply (IVRR) technology, designed in the pilot project, to reach across the digital and language divides.
