We are currently looking to recruit a volunteer Board Treasurer who will play a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity, sustainability, and accountability of Loop. The Treasurer provides strategic financial oversight, governance, and risk management to support the organization's mission and long-term objectives.
Location: All meetings are held on line and so candidates can be based anywhere in the world. We encourage applications from people who come from and have experience with Aid.
Time Commitment:
- Attend Board meetings (5x per year on average).
- Participate in Finance meetings and provide regular financial updates.
- Review financial reports and strategic documents quarterly as well as sign off audits and annual financial reports.
- Engage with auditors, financial officers, and fundraising teams when required.
Terms of Service: A renewable term as defined by Loop’s governance framework, typically for 4 years, with an opportunity to extend further subject to Board approval.
Reports to: Loop Governing Board
Direct relationships: Finance Lead, Loop Lead and external auditors.
Purpose of the Role
The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring sound financial management, compliance with regulatory requirements, and transparent financial reporting. While the Treasurer does not manage daily financial transactions, they oversee financial policies, budgeting, risk management, and investment strategies to safeguard the financial health of Loop.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Oversight
- Oversee and present financial plans, budgets, and financial statements to the Board.
- Liaise with the Finance Lead /Loop Lead and relevant staff to ensure informed financial decision-making.
- Ensure appropriate financial systems and internal controls are in place to prevent mismanagement and fraud.
- Monitor Loop’s financial sustainability, supporting implementation of a strategy for maintaining diversified funding sources.
- Conduct quarterly reviews of financial risks and advise on mitigation strategies.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Review and approve budgets before presentation to the Board, ensuring they align with organizational goals.
- Assess the financial implications of strategic and operational plans to support sustainable growth.
- Provide oversight to ensure funds are allocated efficiently and in line with Loop’s long-term objectives.
Financial Governance & Compliance
- Ensure proper financial controls and risk management frameworks are in place to safeguard Loop’s assets.
- Monitor compliance with legal, regulatory, and donor requirements, ensuring financial accountability.
- Oversee financial reporting and auditing processes, ensuring adherence to statutory and funder requirements.
- Advise the Board on taxation, regulatory compliance, and audit matters, liaising with external auditors when necessary.
Financial Reporting & Audit Liaison
- Liaise with external auditors on behalf of the Board, ensuring the audit process is independent, thorough, and reflective of best practices.
- Advise on financial policies and risk management related to financial reporting, ensuring strong internal controls are in place.
- Ensure the Board understands financial risks and performance, providing high-level summaries rather than operational details.
Fundraising & Grant Compliance
- Ensure compliance with donor requirements and statutory obligations.
- Monitor the use of restricted vs. unrestricted funds, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Oversee effective tracking of fundraising income and expenditures in financial reports.
- Support Loop in maintaining financial transparency for funders, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
Risk & Asset Management
- Sign off on banking matters and financial authorizations based on the statutory requirements, along with the President of the Board.
- Ensure that Loop has proper systems for bookkeeping, payments, and documentation.
- Oversee control measures for fixed assets and risk management.
- Ensure that necessary insurances are in place to protect the organization against financial risks.
Decision-Making Authority
- The Treasurer is responsible for financial oversight but does not handle daily transactions.
- Financial transactions above a defined threshold require approval by the Board President.
- All financial decisions should align with Loop’s mission, funding agreements, and legal requirements.
Qualifications & Skills
The ideal candidate for the Board Treasurer role should have:
- Experience serving on boards or committees with financial oversight responsibilities.
- Ability to analyse financial reports, budgets, and audit findings to provide high-level guidance.
- Familiarity with financial management principles, donor reporting, and regulatory requirements relevant to charities or nonprofit organizations.
- Awareness of financial risks, fraud prevention, and accountability measures.
- Commitment to financial transparency, integrity, and sound financial governance.
- Ability to work effectively with board members, the operational team, and the Finance Manager to support the organization’s financial health.
- Understanding of financial sustainability strategies, investment policies, and grant compliance.
